## Why letters should flinch

Or: fourteen months, four funerals, and the discovery that our flagship serif was too polite to live.

The first cut of Kiln Display was flawless in the way a hotel lobby is flawless. Every curve resolved, every sidebearing even, every terminal polished to a hum. We stared at it for a week and nobody said the word, but we all knew: it did not move anybody.

So we broke it. The WONK axis started as a mistake — a kerning bug that made the g lean into the a like it owed it money. We tried to fix it and the page went dead again. Keep the bug, we said. Then we made the bug a slider, because the only thing better than a happy accident is letting other people have it.

SOFT came from the kettle. Digital letters looked fired-in-a-tunnel, so we rounded joins the way glaze rounds a pot rim — heat, then a little collapse. The axis tops out honest: 100 is the point before the letters start wearing socks.

Cinder Sans was drawn last, in six weeks, on purpose. After living with display letterforms all day you need a face that will carry groceries. It has exactly one idea — be legible at any size — and it never mentions it again.

Everything ships variable because licensing static images of letterforms always felt like selling postcards of a fire.
